Helena Geromont is a born and bred Capetonian who completed all her studies at the University of Cape Town. She did her masters in applied mathematics on “Finite Element Analyses of Eigenvalue Problems in the Stability of Fluid Motions” and spent the early years writing eigensolvers for the Aplied Mechanics Research Unit at the University of Cape Town, followed by a number of years at the finite element research group at INRIA (the French National Research Institute in Mathematics and Information Technology). On her return to South Africa, she joined the Marine Resource Assessment and Management (MARAM) Group, mainly involved in management procedure (MP) development. In particular, she was involved in the development and implementation of MPs to manage the data-rich hake stocks in Southern Africa. Involvement in the assessment and management of other stocks include North Atlantic Bluefin tuna and Southern hemisphere minke whales. She completed her PhD in Applied Mathematics belatedly, after a long absence from fisheries assessment and management. The study investigates the application of simple MPs to data-poor stocks typified by elevated levels of uncertainty. It is titled “Effective Fisheries Management with Few Data: A Management Procedure Approach”.
